You know, after two days of looking like they’d rather be anywhere else—maybe a root canal, or a tax audit—the Americans at the Presidents Cup suddenly decided it was time to put on a show. Down by what felt like a stadium’s worth of points, they shuffled onto Medinah’s fairways for the singles session with the same grim resolve you’d find in someone facing a particularly stubborn jar lid.

But hey, as those wise old sayings (or maybe just something I saw on a motivational poster once) go, you never know when the universe decides to give you a wink. Jacob Bridgeman, God bless him and his eventually victorious soul, probably shouldn’t have started practicing his victory lap so early. The United States, in a move that would make a seasoned bookie sweat through his polyester suit, snagged a ridiculous 9.5 out of 12 available points. That’s how you keep the Presidents Cup trophy in American hands for the eleventh year running.

Tiger Woods, who’s practically invented the concept of coming back from the dead on the golf course, chimed in from his digital throne. "What a comeback!" he declared. You could practically hear him thinking, "Yeah, I get it, guys. Been there, done that, bought the commemorative t-shirt." It was less a golf comeback and more like a resurrection from the golfing equivalent of where good socks go to die.

You could probably compare it to Sisyphus pushing that boulder, except Sisyphus’s boulder probably didn’t have a better chance of finding the hole from fifty-seven feet. Patrick Cantlay, proving he’s got more dramatic flair than a telenovela star, actually holed a putt like that on the 16th. Pure, unadulterated golf magic, the kind that makes you spill your overpriced concession stand soda.

Cameron Young and Justin Thomas, bless their hearts, seemed to have slept just fine, unburdened by the weight of the previous days. They kicked off the charge with quick wins. Then Scottie Scheffler, Chris Gotterup, and Collin Morikawa joined the demolition derby, turning a potential defeat into a full-blown party. The International Team was left scratching their heads, wondering if they’d accidentally played the wrong course.

Seriously, the Americans needed a solid eight points to clinch it, and they went and got it with the enthusiasm of a medieval army storming a castle. With this latest win, the USA’s Presidents Cup record is now a staggering 14-1-1. At this point, the International Team might want to consider a change of scenery. Maybe a nice, quiet retreat to contemplate the finer points of… well, the Ryder Cup.

Even former President Donald Trump, who was there looking important, had to admit it was "unbelievable" and "historic." And you know someone’s impressed when he can’t find enough superlatives.
