Jordan Spieth’s currently in a spot that makes a tightrope walker look like they’re lounging on a beach chair. He’s clawed his way into the St. Jude Championship, which is great, but now he’s got the rather pressing need to play like a man possessed, or at least like he’s trying to escape a swarm of angry bees. If he doesn't, he’ll be watching the BMW Championship from his couch, probably with a bag of chips and a deep sigh. Sitting at a rather uncomfortable 54th in the FedExCup standings, he’s not exactly breathing easy. It feels less like a comfortable perch and more like balancing on a wobbly Jenga tower.
The Spieth story, bless his heart, is always about almost, about the tantalizing possibility that his considerable golf brain and buttery smooth swing will finally decide to show up at the same time. His recent finishes at the Wyndham Championship (T19) and Rocket Classic (T31) show he’s definitely out there, swinging clubs, but they don’t exactly have the crowds throwing their hats in the air. You’d have to go all the way back to April at Augusta to find a truly memorable top-15 finish. That’s either a testament to how tough golf is these days, or maybe just bad luck following him around like a stray golf ball.
Spieth himself, bless his stoic little heart, keeps saying he feels good about his game, even if the scoreboard doesn’t quite agree. He’s out there saying he feels “better than my results have shown,” which is a nice thought, but it also sounds a bit like someone explaining why their soufflé collapsed. He also mentioned that "difficult venues require me to really dial in mentally." Let’s just hope his mental dialing is more like tuning into a clear radio station and less like trying to find a signal on a tin can and string.
Meanwhile, over on the other side of the playoff coin, young Jackson Koivun, who basically arrived on Tour last week, has already zipped into the postseason. This 21-year-old whiz kid, who snuck into the playoffs as the last man in, now faces his own mountain to climb: a 20-spot jump just to make it to the BMW Championship. His rapid ascent is a sharp reminder that while the old guard like Spieth are busy wrestling with their legacies and mortgage payments, fresh talent can burst onto the scene like a rogue squirrel at a picnic. Experience, it turns out, isn’t always the winning ticket in golf’s wonderfully chaotic circus.
