So, Kevin Roy's been out there, apparently channeling his inner golf saint, dropping two straight 63s with nary a bogey in sight. You’d think that kind of divine intervention would land him on top of the leaderboard with a comfy cushion. But nope. In the weird, wild world of pro golf, even a choirboy's score can get upstaged by a sinner who knows how to finish.

Enter Austin Smotherman. Three holes left, trailing Roy’s squeaky-clean card, and he apparently decided "perfect" was just too darn boring. So, he went ahead and birdied all three. Just like that, he didn't just catch Roy, he blew past him, signing for a 62 and grabbing the overnight lead. Honestly, it’s the kind of twist Shakespeare would’ve cooked up, if he’d traded his quill for a 9-iron and developed a deep, abiding love for the smell of freshly cut grass.

Smotherman's sitting pretty at 17-under, a lead about as stable as a toddler on a sugar rush. Doug Ghim and Kevin Streelman are right there, a shot back at 15-under. And get this, Ghim, much like Roy, has also played this whole Black Desert Resort thing without a single bogey. Commendable, sure, but it’s only gotten him a tie for third. This desert, it seems, doesn't just want a clean card; it wants a good old-fashioned Smotherman-style late-round robbery.

Roy’s whole situation is a real-life tragedy of the best kind of flaws: he’s too darn good, too perfect for his own damn good. His 36-hole bogey-free streak, which normally warrants a marching band and fireworks, has instead landed him in the runner-up spot. It's a cosmic joke, a blunt reminder that in this game, it's not always the purest of hearts who win, but the ones who understand the sheer, unadulterated drama of a finish.

Smotherman, chasing his first PGA Tour win and hitting his 100th start, isn’t exactly a stranger to being in the hunt. He’s held the 36-hole lead before, at the Cognizant Classic. This knack for snatching victory from the jaws of "almost there," as proven by those closing birdies, shows a guy who just doesn't quit. You have to wonder if Roy is now looking at his own flawless golf with a sort of sad, philosophical shrug, like he’s just figured out the meaning of life and someone else just won the lottery.

Still, we can take some solace in the fact that these guys have stories. Smotherman’s talked about losing his Tour status, and Roy, in a move that would make Machiavelli proud, once dabbled in medical sales to keep the wolves from the door. Their little duel at Black Desert is a perfect snapshot of the human condition, all that striving and near-misses, nowhere better displayed than on a manicured golf course.
