So, Peter Stassinopoulos, a chap who apparently fancies himself the Rickie Fowler of amateur golf (which, let’s be honest, is a bold claim for someone who’s always good for a top 10 but never the actual win), has finally done it. He snagged the GAM Championship trophy. And how did he do it? By chipping in from off the green during a sudden-death playoff. Revolutionary stuff, folks. This little bit of wizardry meant a tap-in par and, poof, the trophy was his. I guess all that diligent practice finally paid off, or maybe the golf gods just decided to have a good laugh and beam a little luck his way. Probably a healthy dose of both.
He shot even par in the final round, which, bless his heart, tied him with Vibhav Alokam. And what’s more, it was Alokam’s 20th birthday. Happy birthday, kiddo. You lost the championship to a chip shot. To add insult to injury, Alokam flubbed his own chip and then barely missed the putt to force a tie. Tough break, man. We’ve all been there, staring down the barrel of a missed opportunity. Well, some of us have been there more often than others.
Stassinopoulos, who’s about to hang up his clubs for the more pressing realities of the family business (Coney Island restaurants, naturally – a man’s gotta eat), seemed pretty chuffed. He admitted he’d always looked at the big-name college hotshots and wondered if he’d ever reach their level. Turns out, he did. Hard work, you see. Stassinopoulos himself mentioned a crucial birdie on the 17th, followed by a rather dramatic bogey on the 18th. Standard golf drama, really. He saw he needed a birdie to nudge into the lead and got it, only to promptly give it back on the very next hole, thus forcing the playoff. It’s the kind of sequence that makes you wonder if the universe has a twisted sense of humor. Thankfully for Peter, this particular cosmic gag ended with him holding a trophy.
