Well, it seems the golf gods, in their infinite and utterly baffling wisdom, have decided Jackson Koivun’s victory lap should be shorter than a chip shot on a lightning-fast green. Barely has the Minnesota dew dried on his triumphant scorecard – a scorecard that, let’s be honest, looked like he was playing a different game entirely, leaving Scottie Scheffler and company in his dust by a frankly embarrassing twenty-five shots under par – than he’s being yanked back into the competitive trenches. His first PGA Tour win, in his third-ever pro start, clearly didn't earn him a week of putting his feet up and admiring his handiwork.

This weekend, Koivun gets a rather unceremonious wake-up call in the form of the Rocket Classic at Detroit Country Club. The invitation arrived with the subtlety of a drill sergeant’s boot, demanding his presence for a pre-dawn tee time of 6:33 a.m. CT on Thursday. I’m picturing the celebratory champagne barely having stopped fizzing before he’s staring down the chilly Michigan air, not with a buddy, but with the likes of Wyndham Clark and Keegan Bradley. This isn't a friendly foursome; it’s more like being thrown to the wolves, albeit very talented, very well-dressed wolves.

Scottie Scheffler, bless his dominant heart, has wisely ducked this particular Michigan showdown. But don’t think that means the competition is suddenly a walk in the park. Koivun still has to deal with last year’s champ, Aldrich Potgieter, plus a whole host of other golf heavyweights like Cameron Young, Rickie Fowler, and the ever-entertaining Jordan Spieth. It’s as if the golfing heavens are asking, "Was that Minnesota win a fluke, or is this kid actually for real?"

For those of us who enjoy our golf served with a side of existential dread and early-morning grogginess, the first round coverage kicks off on Golf Channel at 2 p.m. CT. It might be a brutal start for Koivun, but for us couch potatoes, it’s a front-row seat to what could be the very beginning of something special. Let’s just hope the coffee is strong and the birdies are plentiful.
