Right then, it's official. Great Britain & Ireland has wrestled the Llandudno International Trophy from the clutches of Uncle Sam. For the first time since the distant year of 2017, and only the eighth time in the entire history of this thing, GB&I finally stomped all over the United States, bagging the 32nd PGA Cup with a rather convincing 16.5-9.5 trouncing at The K Club.

The home team, bless their hearts, strolled into Sunday's singles matches with a lead so fat, it was practically wearing sweatpants: 11.5-4.5. They only needed a couple of points, really. You’d have thought the Yanks would have packed it in, but no. They decided to have a stern word with their putters, managing to scrape a 5-5 split in the singles. A valiant, if ultimately pointless, effort to stir the pot.

GB&I Captain David Scott had his lads primed and ready for a Sunday scrap, but the Americans’ supposed "fightback" was about as menacing as a poodle wearing a party hat. The hosts just played solid, dependable golf. Turns out, when it comes to this particular cup, playing at home is less of an advantage and more of a full-on, unfair superpower.

Scott, looking like he’d just mainlined pure joy, gushed about his team's grit. "Even though on paper we weren’t as strong, the heart in the team is tremendous," he chirped. Which, let's be honest, is golf-speak for "we might not be as talented, but we care more." And sometimes, that little bit of extra cardiac thump can out-drive even the most perfectly struck four-iron.

Across the pond (metaphorically, of course, they were on the same island), U.S. Captain Ben Polland was gracious in defeat. "In these formats, at the end of the day, those that make putts end up on top, and that’s what they were doing," he stated, delivering a golf truism so old it probably remembers when clubs were made of wood and the ball was made of fluff. Sink the putts, win the cup. It’s not rocket science, but sometimes the Americans just seemed a bit… off-key. Like a band playing the wrong song.

The moment the champagne corks started twitching was when Toby Hunt, bless his nervous system, nudged a three-footer for par on the 15th. It was enough to put him 3-up with three to play, securing the 13.5 points needed and finally, finally, ending a nine-year drought. Hunt described the putt as a "massive relief." I’d wager the drive down the 16th felt about as stressful as a nap in a hammock afterwards.

And Ben Amor, bless his enthusiastic soul, put the cherry on top, snagging a half-point with Ryan Lenahan to nudge GB&I to the magical 16.5. It was a fantastic week for the lads, proving that sometimes, just keeping your head down and focusing on the present shot is all you need. Much like your slightly unhinged uncle advising you at Thanksgiving dinner.
