Roy L. Beck Municipal Golf Course

So, picture this: public golf courses. Places where, you know, the public is supposed to, like, play golf. But apparently, a bunch of enterprising folks figured out how to snag all the good tee times, turning them into little golden tickets they then flogged like they were front-row seats to a dog juggling act. It’s like finding a rare Pokémon, but instead of an adorable creature, you get a Tuesday morning slot at the muni.

These entrepreneurial spirits, often operating in a tight-knit community and shouting their wares on apps that probably vibrate with the sheer volume of whispered deals, would grab these prime reservation slots. Then, BAM! They’d slap a "booking fee" on it – a little bonus for the privilege of not having to wrestle a digital octopus for a 7 AM start. Up to forty bucks for the honor! Because nothing screams "public good" like paying extra for the privilege of paying extra. Honestly, I’ve paid more for less exciting experiences, like assembling IKEA furniture.

This whole racket came to a golfing head, if you will, thanks to some sharp-eyed golfers who blew the whistle. Suddenly, everyone’s talking about how the system was being gamed, leaving regular Joes and Janes who just want to hit a dimpled ball around wondering if they’d have better luck trying to book a flight on a dragon. The powers that be, bless their bureaucratic hearts, finally noticed the kerfuffle. I imagine the conversation went something like, "Wait, people are selling tee times? Can we get a cut of that?"

Now, Governor Newsom, presumably after a particularly frustrating round where his ball kept finding the rough, has signed a bill into law. This new legislation basically tells these tee-time ticket scalpers to pack up their imaginary briefcases and go home. It means you can’t just snatch up public tee times and then flip them like a bad pancake. The goal? To get those coveted slots back into the hands of the folks who actually pay taxes to keep these courses from turning into overgrown putting greens for squirrels.
