Alright folks, gather 'round for the latest installment of "Can Brooks Koepka Actually Make the Playoffs?" The Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club is less a golf tournament and more a high-stakes job interview for anyone clinging to the PGA Tour bubble. For our man Brooks, who’s currently sitting in the decidedly unglamorous 86th spot in the FedEx Cup points race, this is basically his last chance to avoid the golf equivalent of being sent to summer school. He needs a performance so epic it’ll make Homer blush, or at least a charge so powerful it’d make Robert E. Lee nod in approval.
You gotta feel for the guy. One minute he’s raking in LIV cash, living the good life, and the next he’s sweating over a 10-footer at Sedgefield just to keep his PGA Tour card. His season’s been a bit of a mixed bag, hasn't it? A few flashes of that old Brooks magic, a top-10 here, a bunch of top-25s there, but nothing quite enough to make him feel secure. He needs a week where he’s not just good, but spectacular. A real "hold my beer and watch this" kind of performance.
The odds are stacked against him. To even make it to the playoffs, where only the top 70 get to play, he pretty much needs to win. A win! Anything less, and he’s looking at the FedEx Fall. Think of it as the PGA Tour’s version of a participation trophy – less glory, less cash, and frankly, a bit of a bummer.
His tee time on Friday is 1:16 p.m. ET. He’s out there with Keegan Bradley and Bud Cauley. I imagine the conversation will be a delightful mix of "Nice drive, Brooks!" and "Man, this rough is brutal, huh?" followed by a collective sigh about the sheer absurdity of professional golf.
For those of you who enjoy watching a man teeter on the brink of playoff glory (or ignominious defeat), the TV schedule is your friend. The Golf Channel will be on from 3-6 p.m. ET, and if you’re an early bird or just really, really dedicated, PGA Tour Live on ESPN+ starts its coverage at the crack of dawn, 6:45 a.m. ET. Plenty of time to witness birdies, bogeys, and Brooks’s increasingly desperate face.
